The newspaper wants to know why Jeopardy is on at 3:30 PM in the Chicago area. I must admit that this is not an issue I've thought about much. In fact, before I read the story, I had no clue when Jeopardy ran in Chicago.
As the story points out, Jeopardy airs at 6:30 PM, 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM in most markets. The reason why Jeopardy is on Chicago's ABC affiliate so early is simple: "Because it pretty much always has been, and it's always succeeded there."
The article quotes a 1985 story about how Jeopardy was romping and stomping in the afternoon. So the station has just left the show alone for all these decades. As you might expect, the show has continued to enjoy nice ratings during the Holzhauer Era. The household numbers look really good compared to Chicago's sports team. Only the Cubs are even in the ballpark, so to speak.
