Believe it or not, the board has a thread about old game shows! Only these shows aren't just the usual fodder you see on Buzzr. Instead, the thread chats about the Library of Congress collection of Goodson-Todman antiquities. The LoC has recently paid some attention to this extensive archive. They're investigating original air dates and cataloguing the oldies but goodies.
One surprise for me: the LoC possesses over 170 eps of Two for the Money (1952-57). For some reason I thought that only a handful of episodes from this You Bet Your Life knockoff had survived the onslaughts of time and wiping.
Two for the Money was mainly a monologue/interview vehicle for star Herb Shriner, with a quizzer tacked on as an afterthought. The show started on NBC but then moved to CBS as their response to Groucho and friends. The Indiana-bred Shriner would offer homespun wit and wisdom for city dwellers, as the title card indicates (see screenshot). Years ago GSN ran a few eps.
It's heresy to say it, but in some ways I liked Shriner's down-home approach more than Groucho's urban wise apple shtik. For instance, I really got tired of Groucho's constant (and not overly funny) put-downs of poor old announcer George Fenneman. If you want to sample Two for the Money, YouTube offers a few bits and pieces. Don't look for the show on Buzzr, thanks to the tobacco sponsorship and the diginet's move away from black-and-white stuff.
Of course, you could always stop by the LoC and ask to watch all 170+ episodes, if you've got nothing better to do.
