Tom gets noticed

Rambling around the game show Interwebs, I came across an offbeat survey on Game Show Forum.

The thread asked for the greatest successor hosts in game show history. In other words, who were the top game show hosts who didn't start with a show but succeeded other hosts?

It should be real easy to guess who landed in first place. Alex Trebek, who succeeded Art Fleming on Jeopardy, was the runaway winner for the top slot. This was partly a sentimental choice, though it was completely defensible for objective reasons.

For me the real surprise was the number two pick. Yes, it was the pictured Tom Bergeron, who succeeded Peter Marshall (and others) on Hollywood Squares. Not to dismiss Mr. Bergeron, but I've never thought of him as a top game show host of any kind, successor or not. But the oldies fans at Game Show Forum apparently have a soft spot for Peter Marshall and were eager to give his signature show a mention on their ballots.

I thought that an obvious choice like Bob Barker (succeeding Bill Cullen on The Price is Right) or Pat Sajak (succeeding Chuck Woolery on Wheel of Fortune) would land in second. And those guys did finish #3 and #4, so it's not like they got overlooked. Also, it's a classically small sample, with only 39 ballots in the survey. But Tom Bergeron somehow managed to place ahead of people who are far more famous for hosting game shows. Go figure.
