Links weak and strong

Right now I'm watching the Weakest Link reboot on the NBC web site. It pretty much looks like what I remember of the original run.

Jane Lynch is doing the Queen of Mean shtik that comes so naturally to her and is channeling Anne Robinson in her late and unlamented (by me) obnoxiousness. The trivia questions seem heavy on pop culture, which I expected for a dumbed-down quizzer. And they're still voting people off the island, er, game show in a depressing variant of envious democracy.

In other words, it's the same old same old Weakest Link, a format that was never a particular favorite of mine. So I'm not a fair-minded reviewer and you should disregard my comments if you're a fan of the show. Now if they would only drop contestants through the floor, it might be a lot more fun. Can't we get anybody to reboot Russian Roulette?

Of course, my opinion means nothing. The only reviewer who literally counts, the Nielsen Company, liked the debut ep. 5.93M viewers and a 1.2 18-49 ratings. One caveat: the Anne Robinson version started out with good numbers and cratered quickly. But nowadays the show could survive with half that initial audience of six million or so. The broadcast networks are pale shadows of their former selves.
