Conniption fit

The first week of Jeopardy's new socially distanced season wasn't even finished, and we had our first rules rumpus.

The most important caveat: this commotion was pretty silly because it didn't affect the outcome of the game in any way. What happened is that contestant Betsy Reisz wrote "Barry Gordy" in response to the final clue about the famed Motown producer. He actually spells his name "Berry Gordy."

The judges ruled her answer incorrect, which set off a tempest on social media. The ruling made no difference because Betsy was hopelessly behind in third place and would have remained there even if the judges had accepted her spelling. But that didn't stop the critics.

Maybe the judges shouldn't have been so picayune. And maybe Betsy should have just written "Gordy" and avoided the entire rumpus. But a few fireworks over the rules never hurt any game show. At least it got people talking about Jeopardy.
