Programming decision

TV stations have been known to make poor choices now and then.

David Carroll is a news anchor in Chattanooga, TN. In a wry column he recounts how he once helped make a bad decision back in the 1980s. He was working in another market as a morning host. His boss at the station would occasionally ask for his opinion on possible syndies to pick up.

One syndie offered to the station was a quizzer hosted by an "obscure Canadian," who was "certainly no Bob Barker." Carroll advised against picking up the show because the subject matter was just too hard for that famous creature, the average viewer. The boss agreed, and the station chose reruns of Barney Miller instead.

You can probably guess the rest of the story. The quizzer was Jeopardy and the host was some guy named Alex Trebek. Another station in the market picked up the show and proceeded to win the ratings wars night after night.

Hey, we all make mistakes. Who knew that some answer and question show would last forever?
