Bill Engvall's word game

Not long ago a commenter noted that Pluto TV was now running Lingo on its version of Game Show Central.

Sure enough, I dropped by Pluto TV today and there was Lingo in all its glory. Well, some of its glory, if you go by the reactions of many critics and GSN's audience. Because this was Bill Engvall's 2011 reboot of the show, not GSN's original 2002-07 version with Chuck Woolery.

Mr. Engvall's show died a quick death after just one season and forty episodes. There was much kvetching on the web that the reboot messed up one of GSN's signature shows, and viewers seemed to agree. The new version tried some mildly off-color humor, and Bill Engvall's often sarcastic persona was a sharp (and to many unpleasant) contrast to Chuck Woolery's more sympathetic style.

But the gameplay was still a lot of fun, with plenty of play-along value to challenge the audience. I would like to see Chuck's original version on Game Show Central one of these days, but in a way it's nice that GSN is digging out the more obscure Engvall eps. At least Game Show Central is presenting some largely forgotten bits of GSN history.
