100 opponents

The advent of Game Show Central has allowed your faithful blogger to sample a lot of nearly forgotten GSN originals in decent-quality video. I stopped by Pluto TV and GSN's 2010-11 remake of 1 vs. 100 was playing. A lot of reviewers savaged this show, and it expired after one season of forty eps.

The biggest objections centered on cheapness - the mob was virtual instead of in-person and the prize money was a lot less than the NBC original's - and on Carrie Ann Inaba's supposed shortcomings as the host.

There's no denying that GSN cheapened things to fit into a mid-sized cabler's budget. If that offended your sense of financial propriety, this remake was not for you. As for Carrie Ann, she did tend to yell a lot and repeat a few too many catch phrases. Compared to NBC's witty host Bob Saget, she admittedly seemed a bit on the amateurish side.

But the gameplay was still good enough. A lone contestant facing a hungry mob of 100 opponents always made for a fun game. Too bad that in one ep I saw, the lone contestant chickened out at the $1,000 level. And on another ep I saw, a bolder contestant got wiped out at the $2,500 level.

But some people took home more money. Either they would win or the mob would win. It was a simple game, no?
