Greatest ever

Always alert to stories on the greatest game show ever - the 1973-82 incarnation of Match Game, of course - your friendly blogger spotted this Closer story. The site quotes semi-regular Fannie Flagg on her recollections about the show...

Charles Nelson Reilly and Brett Somers would have martinis and get a little loopidy-doopidy. Those are some of my favorite memories.

"Looridy-doopidy" does sound like a Fannie-ism. It wouldn't have been out of place on the show itself. She also recalls Gene Rayburn fondly...

Gene was just the sweetest, silliest man. An adorable, flirty guy - always in a good mood and thrilled to have his job.

This was before "flirtiness" could get you fired. But there's no doubt that Gene always seemed to be having fun on the show, unlike a certain other game show host famous for Family Feud. The story includes a comment by Betty White that Richard Dawson "wasn't the happiest man in the world." By the end of his tenure on Match Game, that was a whopping understatement.

One small quibble. The story says that Match Game got the ax in 1979. That was true of the CBS network version, but syndie Match Game lasted until 1982. The story also says that no subsequent revival ever matched the success of the 1973-82 run. Fair enough, though the current ABC version has endured for four seasons and 54 eps in prime time, with another season debuting on May 31.
