Vanna goes it alone

Just watched Vanna White's first episode as the host of Wheel of Fortune while Pat Sajak was recovering from his emergency surgery.

Not to be unkind, but I doubt that Pat has to worry about his job security. Vanna was minimally acceptable as the host, at best. She didn't bollix anything up too badly, except on the final spin when she forgot which arrow was in play. But she did little else beyond reading the cue cards and offering a few standard cheers for the contestants.

Okay, I'm being harsh. It would be hard for anybody to step in and match Pat's understated humor and easy command of the show. At least the game got played and the bonus round got won.

Minnie Mouse filled in as the letter-toucher. Only she didn't touch the letters, she just waved at the board. So we'll call her the board-waver. She also spun around sometimes when somebody solved a puzzle.

By the way, I'm not sure if the set was closed for the episode. There was a brief audience shot at the top of the show, but that could have come from any previous taping. In the bonus round, the contestant's family appeared by themselves, with no audience in sight. Maybe Buy a Vowel is right and they closed the set to help calm Vanna.
