An article at a site called The Athletic alleges that the Astros used cameras and trash-can banging (honest) to tell their batters when an offspeed pitch was coming. The article lies hidden behind a paywall, but a zillion other sites have picked up the story.
So what does this have to do with game shows? By sheer dumb coincidence today's Jeopardy ep featured a clue about sign-stealing in baseball. The clue (see screenshot) alluded to shenanigans by the then New York Giants in 1951 and the Boston Red Sox in 2017.
A site called 12up has posted an unintentionally hilarious column stating that the Jeopardy clue was a quick reaction to the Astros story. Of course, today's Jeopardy episode was taped many weeks ago, long before the Astros stuff came out. I'd like to think that the 12up column is tongue-in-cheek, but the writer really seems to think that Jeopardy meant to slam the Astros...
In what may be the one of the best troll jobs of the year, Jeopardy! took a shot at the 'Stros with a sign-stealing based question on Tuesday night's show...It took less than 24 hours for the report about the Astros' espionage to wind up on a game show. Pretty impressive reaction time there from the Jeopardy! team...The Astros have a reputation around the league for their penchant of sign stealing, but the fact that this happened during their World Series-winning season makes it even more concerning. But that didn't stop Alex Trebek and Co. from having some fun at the organization's expense.
I mean, seriously? This guy doesn't realize that Jeopardy eps are taped long in advance? I really hope he's not that dumb and that he's just trolling us.
