Bit of dishonesty

Rambling around the game show Interwebs, I came across this blog entry from a writer named Mark Evanier.

He types a long post about Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour. Not much of it will be new to readers of this blog. He speculates at length on why the show didn't succeed, but I think he misses the two most obvious reasons. The Match Game half was so-so at best, and the Hollywood Squares half was a disaster. Mark Goodson wouldn't allow prepping of the celebs, and that's required to make any version of Hollywood Squares work. Otherwise, each celeb tends to natter on with little humor or interest.

Evanier does have one interesting story to tell. He once met Jon Bauman, one of the show's two hosts, and Bauman told him how a celeb on the Match Game half of the show would cheat to get more air time...

According to Jon, there was one recurring panelist who craved the extra screen time that would be his if he played in both rounds [of the Match Game half]…so in Round 1, he'd quickly write down two responses. When called upon to display his answer, he would show one that didn't match the contestant. Ergo, the star got to play in Round 2.

Seems like Standards & Practices would have squelched this in a hurry, because such chicanery would affect the outcome of the game. And how did the celeb get away with the double-card trick when the crew was watching? Oh well, another bit of game show legend is born.
