Pop goes the cab

Cash Cab debuts on Bravo next Monday, and I'll post a full review then. Meanwhile, there's this trailer.

Rumor was that Bravo's version of the taxi quizzer would emphasize pop culture. The bit of video in the linked article reinforces this notion. Ben quizzes the contestants about judges on The Voice. Luckily for the cab riders, they know the show.

Dour critics might frown on Cash Cab dumbing down the questions to pop level. But the show didn't get big numbers when Discovery brought it back in 2017. So Bravo execs probably figured that a lighter touch was necessary. Less high culture and more pop culture.

Way back in 1984 a snooty pundit named Mike Duffy thought that the new syndicated version of Jeopardy was also too heavy on the pop. The new Jeopardy is a disgrace. It may get ratings, but it deserves no respect. The slicked-up new version of one of television's few intelligent game shows is aimed straight at a pinhead pop-culture mentality.

Jeopardy survived this less than prescient criticism. We'll see how the new version of Cash Cab performs.
