End of the run

Jason Zuffranieri's 19-win run on Jeopardy has come to a close.

Nobody wins forever, not even Ken Jennings or James Holzhauer. The final episode today looked promising for Jason, as he easily outdistanced his rivals in the front game. But he didn't quite put the game out reach for Final Jeopardy, and the Sydney Opera House got him. Those naughty Aussies!

As Alex Trebek pointed out at the top of the show, Jason adopted a cautious betting style, unlike James' hell-for-leather play. So he didn't pile up nearly as much cash per episode as the wily sports bettor. But Jason still leaves with over five hundred grand, which is good pay for a math teacher. There's usually not much money in algebra and trigonometry. (Though Andrew Wiles collected about $700,000 for proving Fermat's Last Theorem. So there's some money in math.)

Nowadays it's impossible to write about Jeopardy without thinking of...you know what. At the end of the show Alex said that we'll see Jason in an upcoming tournament of champions. Let's hope Alex is there to see it, too.
