Ancient history

Hadn't stopped by Game Show Forum in a while. So I decided to see what the oldies fans were chatting about.

The top thread was, surprise, a bit of ancient game show history. Did NBC make a big mistake...in canceling "Match Game" in 1969 for the soap "Somerset"? Have to admit, this is not a subject I've given a lot of thought to. But it's the kind of topic that gets oldies freaks interested in a hurry.

Turns out that NBC did not cancel the original Match Game - which was stiff as a board, in my opinion - for Somerset. Instead, the network replaced the game show with something called Letters To Laugh-In. Oh yeah, I remember that great show (not).

Another poster on the thread notes that Dark Shadows on ABC hurt Match Game's ratings. I don't know where they're digging up this stuff, but we're talking about events a half-century ago. These guys should hold history classes on old game shows. Or maybe that's what they're already doing every day on the board.
