It's big and round

Another day, another game show to review. This time it was Spin the Wheel, Fox's effort to make the Wheel of Fortune gizmo look puny.

Truth be told, the enormous wheel was the most impressive thing about the show. It looked to be forty feet tall and it flaunted a lot of electronic whizbangery. The wedges flashed and glittered and metamorphosed before our very eyes. Sometimes the entire wheel exploded in various colors depending on the whims of the showrunners.

On the famous other hand, the least impressive thing about the show was the rulebook, which weighed several tons. The gameplay got so complicated that I won't even try to summarize all the ins and outs and roundabouts. I will say that the contestant on the debut episode took sixteen spins and answered twelve pop-culture trivia questions. I will also say that the contestant's brother - in a clear borrowing from NBC's The Wall - exerted an enormous influence on how the game finally played out.

One odd note: in what had to be a nod toward Pat and Vanna, the last spin was labeled, you guessed it, the "final spin." Mr. Sajak did not walk onto the stage to take it, though.

Unlike Pat Sajak, host Dax Shepard never got to spin the wheel himself, but he seemed enthusiastic enough about the proceedings. The sheer spectacle of the wheel was entertaining, and the studio audience whooped it up impressively. All in all, Spin the Wheel was an acceptable way to spend an hour. Just don't ask me to list all the rules.
