Final answer

It's really not news, but Millionaire will finally get the ax after three ABC seasons and seventeen seasons as a syndie.

Industry sources have hinted for months that the new talker with Tamron Hall would replace the quizzer among Disney-ABC's syndie offerings. The show has now made the cancellation official.

As you probably know, Millionaire brought big money game shows back to broadcast network prime time with its debut in 1999. The long shadow of the rigging scandals finally lifted, as Millionaire went on to become a ratings sensation with Regis Philbin at the helm. ABC burned the show out after only three seasons, but Millionaire lived on for a long, long time in syndication.

Meredith Vieira helmed the syndie for the first eleven years. Cedric Kyles and Terry Crews then hosted for a season apiece. (The showrunners were trying to find the next Steve Harvey, though a serious quizzer like Millionaire was far from the fun and games of Family Feud.) Chris Harrison guided the show with a steady hand for the last four seasons.

Syndie Millionaire was never a ratings smash, but the show produced respectable numbers. The format was rock solid and the questions were tough. So tough, in fact, that the show's title became a misnomer because nobody ever won the million. No matter, not many shows last for twenty years, or anything close. Hail and farewell.
