Amid the usual stuff on supposedly awful game shows, there was a commentary on "YouTube demonetization." I don't post on YouTube, so I had never heard of the issue. But Game Show Garbage is upset that YouTube is keeping them from collecting ad money for their video reviews of game shows. The problem is that the reviews use copyrighted material from the shows. Or "reused content," as YouTube calls it.
The entire issue of copyrighted content is a tricky one. For instance, I'm surprised that Game Show Newsnet hasn't run into copyright troubles. After all, they simply copy most of their entries, word for word, from other sites. I've also posted about Fremantle's (wrongheaded, in my view) copyright challenges to the superb Match Game and What's My Line YouTube channels.
YouTube does allow other sites to embed their videos, and I use the privilege to post clips from various game shows in this blog's sidebar. Almost always I use videos from the shows' official sites, to avoid copyright challenges to third-party clips. I also use images and screenshots from various sites, including the humorous one in this entry. But these are snippets from stories and videos, not entire copies.
In the almost ten years that I've been blogging about game shows, I've only had one request to take down an image. But it had nothing to do with copyright. GSN didn't want a photo from the pilot for their Pyramid remake to appear before the show's debut.
I'm sorry that Game Show Garbage has run into trouble with YouTube, but you do have to be careful with "reused content" from other producers. Especially when you're making money off it.
