Don't change a thing

Some commenters don't like it when I criticize the oldies boards. Too bad. They provide so much good material.

Dropped by Game Show Forum, the granddaddy (sorry) of all the oldies hangouts, for the first time in a while today. They were chewing over the press release announcing Joel McHale as the host of ABC's Card Sharks reboot. The reaction was pretty much as you would expect. A typical comment...

Somewhat awkwardly worded, but this does seem to be the traditional Money Cards format we know and love.

As Tonto famously said in the parody: "What Do You Mean 'We'?" This blogger doesn't love much of anything about Card Sharks. I always thought the show was a particularly lame version of acey-deucey, an already lame card game. For the oldies world, though, it's hard to imagine that any viewer wouldn't collapse in complete adoration of the ancient format. As the GSF poster goes on to say...

I think logic and recent history would suggest that Fremantle has learned to stick with what worked originally.

Man, I wish they would change the format into something a little more intriguing than yelling "higher" when the card is less than an eight. Another poster doesn't like that new host Joel McHale seems less than bowled over in the presence of a Great Classic From The Golden Age Of Game Shows...

He may treat this as a paycheck and nothing more - his quote in the Deadline story isn't encouraging.

The poster is clucking over McHale's comment that losers on the show will be fed to tiger sharks. Maybe not the greatest quip, but GSF was no doubt looking for this kind of quote: "I'm honored, awestruck, and overwhelmed to follow in the footsteps of the unimaginably great Jim Perry in this humble reboot of the unimaginably great Card Sharks."

Oh well, acey-deucey starts up again this summer. Watch your step, ABC and Mr. McHale. The oldies world is watching.
