Bill Cullen?

Looking through the game show board at Sitcoms Online - why did a sitcom web site start a game show board, anyway? - I ran across a thread called "Least Favorite Game Show Hosts." I figured the thread would feature a lot of the usual Internet suspects for most disliked host, and I wasn't disappointed. Guys like Patrick Wayne, Louie Anderson and Steve Harvey all took the drubbings I've seen a zillion times on various game show sites.

But the oddest note was the first host mentioned by the original poster: Bill Cullen. That's right, somebody out there on the game show Interwebs really dislikes Bill Freakin' Cullen.

To state the obvious, Bill is normally an icon on game show sites, and there's hardly ever a word of criticism about him. But I can sort of see what the o.p. was driving at...

Bill Cullen - probably my least favorite game show host ever. It doesn't help that I didn't care for most of the shows I saw him on (Child's Play, Hot Potato, Blockbusters, etc). It also didn't help that there was a few times - on different shows - where he clearly didn't have an understanding of someone's answer, or of the rules of the game, and someone suffered for it. I know he was on a lot of classic old-time shows, but what I saw him on just didn't endear him to me.

Yes, by the time that Bill was doing the mentioned slows, he had frankly lost a step or three. He tended to run the shows at his own very relaxed pace, and technically he wasn't the most alert host.

Still, he still was always ingratiating and good for a decent quip or story. Too bad the poster hadn't seen much of him in his prime, in the '50s and '60s. He was at the top of his game then, and few have matched him since.
