History lesson

Last time I stopped by Game Show Paradise, they were chewing over Buzzr's addition of Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour.

Which isn't surprising. The oldies board devoutly follows every twist and turn of the Buzzr saga. But once in a long while they do notice GSN, the game show network that actually gets an audience in the real world. Except Game Show Paradise often gets things wrong.

A maybe picayune case in point. A GSP poster commented...

Deal or No Deal which bowed in December 2005 is the second oldest show on GSN at this point behind MG7x. GSN Chain Reaction bowed in August 2006.

Game Show Paradise regards "oldest" as a synonym for "best." But the assertion is wrong, anyway. The second oldest show on GSN by debut date is Cash Cab.

I'll admit it's close. Deal or No Deal debuted on December 19, 2005. Cash Cab had premiered exactly two weeks earlier on December 5, 2005.

Okay, I'm picking nits. The real point is that, by normal TV standards, GSN's schedule has started to accumulate dust. Today there are five shows on the schedule with more than ten years on them by debut date: Match Game, Deal or No Deal, Chain Reaction, Cash Cab, and Catch 21. (I'm exempting Wheel of Fortune, though GSN's 2013-14 eps are getting a little frayed around the edges, too.)

Okay, the schedule isn't downright Paleozoic like Buzzr's lineup. But if the oldies boards weren't so committed to GSN-bashing, they might notice the years piling up at our little game show network. And I'm not just talking about the old-skewing audience.

Maybe the oldies boards are upset that GSN still insists on running originals. Sorry, but America Says and Common Knowledge are bringing home the Nielsen bacon.
