Having missed the boat on big-name, big-money QBs Mike Reilly and Bo Levi Mitchell on Day 1 of CFL Free Agency, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have gone back to veteran Zach Collaros. (Did anyone actually believe either one of those two was coming to Saskatchewan anyway?)
3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reports the Riders and Collaros have agreed on a 1-year contract for the 2019 season. It’s likely for far less than the $430,000 Collaros reportedly earned in 2018 with the Green & White.
Despite the concussion problems which caused Collaros to miss five games including the Western Semifinal last year, the 30-year old Cincinnati product was still 10-4 as a starter. He threw for 2,999 yards, 9 TDs and 13 interceptions.
However the Collaros signing isn’t likely with the intention of him being the #1 man (unless he’s healthy). It’s believed the Riders are in talks with free agent pivot Jonathan Jennings, whose relationship has soured with the B.C. Lions.
When asked if a deal with Saskatchewan is imminent, Jennings wrote me on Tuesday, “We’ll see what happens.” But his price just went up, and Ottawa is trying to sign him too.
This really is turning into an auction!
It remains my prediction that Jennings will QB the Riders in 2019. However if he signs in Ottawa, I’m not optimistic about the Riders’ chances.
Stay tuned,
RP
