Whaddaya know?

Just watched the debut of GSN's new trivia fest Common Knowledge.

Long story short: it's an okay quizzer but nothing special. Another hit like America Says is extremely unlikely. The show offers a respectable combo of what should truly be common knowledge and a lot of obscure or downright weird trivia.

For instance, the debut ep asked which vitamin is best for strong bones. Well, you've probably heard that vitamin D is good for the skeleton, and you'd be right. On the other hand, did you know that the Eiffel Tower was originally built as a merely temporary structure? Sounds like French Trivia for $1,000, Alex. And as an example in the weird department, the show also asked what you should do if a leech latches onto you.

Surprisingly, you should just let the leech eventually fall off. Next time one of the critters attaches itself to me, I'll know what to do...thanks to a game show. In fact, such goofball queries are probably the best thing about the show.

Two teams of three compete in the reasonably paced quizzer. Joey Fatone hosts in a genial style and never comes off as a snooty know-it-all. (Not to mention any names, Alex Trebek.) Common Knowledge is a passable timewaster but hardly improves on the ancient Q&A format. Unlike America Says, which is a genuine improvement on the sometimes dawdling Family Feud format.
