Shopping GSN Games

Besides the upbeat ratings news, there's another story making the rounds about GSN.

The news doesn't concern the cable network, but rather the associated video games operation, GSN Games. Variety first broke the story about how corporate parents Sony and AT&T are looking for bids on the video gamer. It's not certain if there will be an outright sale, or if Sony will just buy out AT&T and take full control.

There's little question that AT&T wants to cash in on the deal, due to the debt load from its acquisition of Time Warner. Sony may want to keep GSN Games as part of its video empire, though a big offer could change their minds.

In its comment on the story, Motley Fool runs through possible scenarios for a partial or complete sale. Whatever the fate of GSN Games, Variety and the Fool agree that both corporate parents - Sony is the senior partner with 58% control - want to hang onto the GSN cable network. It's easy to understand why.

GSN has prospered over the past few years as never before, with a place in the top thirty cable nets. There's no 24/7 competition except for a sparsely distributed and largely unwatched diginet, which is almost completely confined to dusty relics. And Buzzr seems to be giving up on conventional TV, anyway, in favor of an online approach.
