Black and white realities

The previous post noted that Buzzr, our little oldies diginet, will shake up the weekday schedule starting January 14.

One of the moves is the exile of the black and white shows to the deadest of the dead-of-night hours. In a comment I speculated that it's probably the beginning of the end for the B&W shows on Buzzr, just as they have long since vanished (with a few exceptions over the holidays) from GSN.

An unsentimental commenter replied that the end of the non-color shows would come "not soon enough." The blunt fact is that such a reaction is almost universal in the TV universe. Black and white is the kiss of ratings death. Even Buzzr runs promos about how they have "updated" shows like What's My Line and To Tell the Truth with color episodes. ("Updated" is relative. The color eps are about a half-century old themselves.)

While I still loves me my What's My Line channel on YouTube (see screenshot), I won't pretend that the ancient monochrome images have much appeal in today's world. I'm aged enough to remember when color TV first appeared, and it quickly took over the television landscape. Even back then, black and white seemed dull and passé, and things haven't changed much over the decades.
