The Lead Up: Pats fall to Raiders in 2018-19 Home Opener
The Regina Pats fell 3-1 on Saturday night in their home opener against the Prince Albert Raiders. Regina got the game’s first goal on a beauty rush from Aaron Hyman, who took a feed from Jake Leschyshyn and buried a backhand shot off the far post and in. The Pats took a 1-0 lead to the second, but the Raiders responded with two goals from Cole Fonstad and led 2-1 after forty minutes. In the third, Brett Leason added some insurance for the Raiders with a powerplay goal and it was 3-1 and that was the final score. The Raiders outshot the Pats 37-28 in the victory, the Regina powerplay was oh for eight and the penalty kill two for four. Max Paddock led the way with 34 saves.
Pats Acquire McNabb from Victoria
The Regina Pats acquired 18-year-old goaltender Dean McNabb from the Victoria Royals on Tuesday. The Pats also receive a ninth-round pick in 2019. In exchange, Victoria receives an eighth-round pick in 2020 and a conditional fifth round pick in 2020 in the trade. McNabb (6’2, 176), was drafted by the Royals in the third round in 2015. He appeared in 30 games last season for the Royals and added three more in the 2018 WHL Playoffs. Prior to joining the Royals in 2017-18, McNabb played two seasons with the Regina Pat Canadians, winning a league title in 2016-17, he carried the best goals against average in the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League at 1.67 and was named a first team all-star. McNabb is the younger brother to Vegas Golden Knights defenceman Brayden McNabb.
Hyman’s Fast Start
Pats defenceman Aaron Hyman is off to a fast start in his overage season, scoring a goal in each of the first two games of the regular season. The product of Calgary, Alberta scored early in the third in Prince Albert last Friday and followed it up with a beautiful backhand goal on Saturday at home against the Raiders. Hyman is on pace to well surpass his previous career high in goals for a season which he set last year with three between Regina and Seattle. The 20-year-old has played in 166 career WHL games, scoring eight times and adding 26 assists for 34 points.
Faceoff Machine
Pats captain Jake Leschyshyn is enjoying a good start to the season in the faceoff circle. The 19-year-old signed prospect of the Vegas Golden Knights won 20 of the 29 faceoffs he took against the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday (68.96%). For the season, the Saskatoon product has won 54 per cent of his faceoffs (28 of 52) and in his last 66 career games (since faceoffs wins/losses were recorded), Leschyshyn has won 51.2 per cent of his draws, (636 for 1241).
