10 THINGS I THINK I THINK FOR CAPITAL AUTO MALL

1 - HUMBOLDT STRONG: That was tough. TSN did a wonderful job capturing the Humboldt Broncos' return to the ice in the 2018-19 SJHL season opener on Wednesday. Ultimately the Nipawin Hawks won 2-1 in a game where the score didn't matter. The postgame tribute to the 29 Broncos was gut-wrenching but in true Saskatchewan style, they did it right. To the people of Humboldt and the Broncos organization, you continue to make us proud to be from Saskatchewan.

2 - ON ROUGHRIDERS: Down here in the epicentre of the Rider Nation, the province's other green team - the Saskatchewan Roughriders - is the hottest squad in the CFL. They carry a 4-game win streak into Saturday's home date with the 6-5 Ottawa RedBlacks (7:30 pm, TSN, CKRM). The Riders may or not run the table in their remaining 7 games but one thing is certain: I don't expect them to serve up a stinker the rest of the way. I'll tell you why.

3 - STEELE'ING CONFIDENCE:  Chris Jones will NOT let his team get over-confident down the stretch. Defensive tackle Eddie Steele says Jones has a particular way of doing that. "He really, for lack of a better term, tears us down after these wins," Steel said Wednesday. "In our first film session of the week he has 35-40 clips of everything we did wrong in the game. It's really humbling coming in after a big win - like we have the past four weeks - and being shown all of our mistakes. There's not much praise."

4 - WEE WILLIE: Scruffy tabbed Willie Jefferson's meandering 97-yard Pick 6 in the Banjo Bowl as the "Willie Wave". Listeners suggested the "Jefferson Jog" or "Willy's Pick-A-Dilly" but I like Scruffy's phrase the best. I don't mind hotdogging or elaborate celebrations but would prefer to see them AFTER the whistle. Meh, I seem to be alone in that stance. You go Willie! Swagger.

5 - SATURDAY'S GAME: The Saskatchewan-Ottawa clash will be a brisk one, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary for September football on the prairies. The forecast calls for clouds and 15 degrees Celsius. The Riders are favoured by 4.5-points. Don't forget the REDBLACKS trounced the ROUGHRIDERS 40-17 in Week 2 at the nation's capital. The Riders won't be caught off-guard in this one.

6 - THE SCHEDULE: Not many are bemoaning Saturday's late start time, which could be a nod to the fact everyone's giddy over the team's current win streak. If we want to avoid NFL Sundays in the fall, this is what we get. Meanwhile a few were grumbling about last week's CFL triple-header which spanned 9 straight hours of football. Yet no one was complaining when the NFL did it the very next day.

7 - DARIAN #1: It was a treat to interview Darian Durant on stage at the Annual UofR President's Breakfast on Tuesday, benefitting Cougar Athletics. The 36-year old was relaxed and all smiles as he fielded questions for 20 minutes. Darian's enjoying retirement as he ponders his next move, and is grateful that he has no lingering physical ailments as he plays with his infant daughter. He leaves the game with no regrets and although he feels he could still play, he's not interested in it.

8 - DARIAN #2: The interview was insightful. "Doubles" dropped several nuggets like the fact it took him years to investigate what led to the 13th man debacle in the 2009 Grey Cup. Once he discovered it was because of a lack of preparation on special teams, he was even more furious. Meanwhile Darian started to be overcome with Anxiety in warmups of the 2013 Grey Cup in Regina, so he took some moments to himself in the endzone to calm down and give himself a pep talk. Darian's mental strength is perhaps the biggest reason why he's headed to the Hall of Fame.

9 - WAALLLLLLYYYYYY: Great stat from CFL Head Office: When the BC Lions visit the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night, it will mark Wally Buono's 139th - and last - appearance as either a coach or player in the City of Montreal. His career mark in La Belle Province? 76-58-5.

10 - LOCALLY: The UofR Rams are 1-1 after a pasting of the Golden Bears at Alberta last weekend and will host the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday at Mosaic Stadium on 620 CKRM. ... The Regina Thunder are 2-2 in the PFC and in third-place after Sunday's home loss to the Edmonton Huskies. Regina's PFC team is on a bye in Week 5. ... And the Regina Pats are coming off a preseason sweep of the Brandon Wheat Kings and visit the Saskatoon Blades Thursday night on 620 CKRM. The Queen City Kids will conclude the preseason Friday night at home to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Y'er welcome,
