We've now had so many stunt game shows that I've lost track. The latest is TKO: Total Knock Out from CBS. I just watched the first ep on the network's website. Well, true confession: I watched the first segment. It was plenty enough to get the idea. Another true confession: stunt game shows aren't my favorite sub-genre in our already little genre. I'm a quizzer and word game guy.
But enough of my silly prejudices. TKO doesn't pretend to be anything except a Wipeout knockoff, and it offers exactly the same spectacle as the long-running ABC spill-fest. Contestants get bounced around an obstacle course and pick up some bumps and bruises along the way. By and large TKO seems to treat the players a little more gently than Wipeout. At least they don't go flying so high into thin air. They're in a studio, after all.
The only real gameplay difference is that the other contestants try to make life miserable for the course-runners by throwing nerf-stuff at them. I don't know if this causes any real trouble, but it gets the other contestants onscreen. Kevin Hart hosts by yelling a lot, and there's an occasional overdub where he explains the rules. As if the rules matter on a show like this.
