The exec shakeup at Buzzr tells me that Fremantle isn't really thrilled with the diginet's performance so far. I know new GM Mark Deetjen does a lot of cheerleading about being "really, really happy about where we're at right now."
To be honest, that talk sounds defensive and unconvincing to me. Why is Ron Garfield no longer around if everything is so wonderful? And why try online streaming if Buzzr is so satisfied with its current status?
Anyway, if Fremantle wants to make something out of Buzzr, they're going to need some big-splash acquisitions. The Sony pair seems like a real possibility, but we'll see.
Just to elaborate a little more, Fremantle brought in a guy named Rick Glankler to fix things at Buzzr. We're now seeing the results.
1) A new general manager. Ron Garfield is out and former number two guy Mark Deetjen is in. It's a comparable shakeup to the replacement of Michael Fleming with Rich Cronin at GSN in 2001.
2) Online streaming. TV expansion has been slow when not dead-stopped. Streaming is a way to get Buzzr out there. But it also means that TV outlets will not be particularly eager to add a channel that's already available free on the Internet. This is a critical decision that may well reflect Fremantle's unhappiness with the pace of Buzzr's development.
3) Acquisition of non-Fremantle shows. Another critical decision that is a major departure from the original vision of Buzzr as a way to monetize the Fremantle library. This might show disappointment with the revenue generated by the Fremantle oldies.
