Conspiracy theory

Straws in the wind.

After an exec shakeup at Buzzr, the new general manager announces that the diginet is interested in "a pair" of non-Fremantle shows that are "name brand" properties. Meanwhile, GSN just happens to be running a special on The Price is Right June 17.

Now when somebody in the game show business mentions a pair of non-Fremantle name-brand shows, what pair do you think of? If you're on the oldies boards, you might think of Name That Tune and Concentration. But if you're in the real game show world, you obviously think of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Not to mention that Buzzr seems genuinely interested in blowing some of the dust off the lineup. The new GM goes out of his way to praise Supermarket Sweep, a quite recent show by the diginet's hoary standards. Buzzr will soon strip Celebrity Name Game across weekday prime time, an extremely recent show by their standards. Meanwhile, GSN is desperately looking for big-splash shows to lessen their heavy dependence on Harvey Feud.

So here's the conspiracy theory. GSN and Buzzr (and their corporate parents) do a Grand Swap. GSN gets recent seasons of The Price is Right and Let's Make a Deal from Fremantle, and Buzzr gets recent seasons of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy from Sony.

The swap would produce immediate revenue for Sony and Fremantle, and solve a lot of problems at GSN and Buzzr. Sure, it's wild-blue speculation, and I claim no insider info on any such plans. But at least the swap would make some sense in the real world, unlike much of the wild-blue stuff on the game show Interwebs.
