RIDERS TO SIGN 70-YARD FG KICKER FROM THE CARIBBEAN

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are expected to sign an unknown kicker.

The mysterious kicker was discovered by a Riders scout while on holidays on the small island of Cayman Brac in January. According to reports, the kicker can consistently kick field goals of 70-yards or more.

We've learned his name is Adrian Scott and he arrived on a flight Friday afternoon. Cayman Brac is an island of 60,000 located south of Cuba.

"He's 20 years old and kicks the ball 80 yards," the scout said from his Alabama home.

The discovery was pure accidental as the scout - who was holidaying - was walking past a playground and stopped to watch some kids playing soccer. One appeared to be kicking the ball unusually long.

“I identified myself and asked him if he would be interested doing a workout kicking a North American-style football"

The workout was set up for next day but there was one problem. A ball needed to be found.

"You have no idea how hard it was to find an American style football down there," the scout chuckled. "But I finally found one from some American tourists."

There are no goalposts on the island so he needed to improvise. Using some trees that were near the same width as CFL uprights proved to be answer. "I tied a rope across the same height the same height as our uprights and hung some towels over it."

What he witnessed was astonishing. Scott was consistently kicking a soccer ball through the "uprights" from approximately 70 yards.

"I then let him try kicking the North American style football. Naturally he wasn't used with an oval ball so the accuracy wasn't the same but he could still kick it a mile."

A video of the makeshift workout was sent to the Riders and an official workout was planned.

An official workout was conducted 10 days later on the nearby island of Grand Cayman. Working with an official CFL football and kicking tee Scott did not disappoint.

"I have never seen such height and distance on punts and field goals in my entire life," said a Riders coach who wished to remain anonymous until the official signing. "We needed to get him under contract before some else discovers him. There is no telling how much he could improve with proper footwear and practise."

Ironically Scott, who is a high school dropout, works as a waiter at the Le Soleil d'Or hotel where the scout was staying.

Scott is eligible to play as a National because of his British citizenship.

He could also be assigned to the Regina Thunder Junior team for seasoning.
