This is the one part of the money race on Wheel that I actually pay attention to. It's not like Jeopardy, where the race is everything because the totals are constantly displayed and constantly changing. Not to mention that Jeopardy losers go home with piddly money. On Wheel even the losers often end up with decent amounts of loot. Except when they don't end up with anything but that dratted pity $1,000.
This particular ep of Wheel was even more annoying. The guy who ended up with consolation prize came very close to winning some cash on the last two puzzles. He guessed "Bamboo Shots" on the third tossup instead of the correct "Bamboo Shoots." (What's a bamboo shot, anyway?) Then he guessed "Happy Homeowners" correctly in the speedup round, but the buzzer got him.
So Pat had to award him the pity grand, very apologetically. Sajak looks (often literally) downcast at this moment, as if he's ashamed to dole out such a teensy-weensy consolation prize. That's the way it goes sometimes, Pat.
