Tale of three shows

A few weeks ago I gave a lukewarm review to Ellen's Game of Games. Basically, I said your opinion of the show depends on your opinion of Ellen.

Which is pretty obvious because the show is all Ellen all the time. And since Ms. DeGeneres has a nice built-in fanbase from her syndie show, her prime time game show is doing just fine with the Nielsen Company. The official debut(s) last night got a 2.3 18-49 rating and 8.8M viewers. Nowadays any show that snags a two-something in the Sacred Demo is a runaway hit.

Meanwhile, NBC's former hit The Wall is doing much less business with a 0.8 18-49 rating and 4.4M viewers. In fact, those aren't terrible numbers by current broadcast standards and the show might work its way to a renewal. But Chris Hardwick doesn't have legions of daytime fans storming the prime time barricades.

One sour grapes note. The CBS reboot Million Dollar Password, a much better show than either of the current NBC efforts, also got some two-somethings in the Sacred Demo. But that was back in 2008, when two-something wasn't such a snazzy number. Regis got cancelled.
