Number theory

Breathes there an actuary with soul so dead that he can't enjoy numbers and graphs?

Well, this retired actuary isn't going to try to resist the enjoyment. As an entry noted a few days ago, GSN will run a Thanksgiving day marathon of The Chase. So I dug up my old graph (click to enlarge) of the show's viewer numbers for all its new eps from August 2013 to December 2015.

The first question from the graph is obvious. Why in hades did GSN ever cancel this show? Even the last batch of new eps in November and December of 2015 averaged over 600K viewers. For a network that's currently wandering in the low 300K range for prime time and the mid-200K range for total day, those numbers look great.

The Chase peaked at over 700K viewers three times, which I've marked on the graph. After a relatively slow start in August 2013, The Chase brought in viewers like few shows before or since on our little game show network.

I've seen several explanations for the show's demise. 1) An outsized prize budget. Mark Labbett didn't often lose but when he did, it cost GSN a bundle. 2) The dreaded old skew. This wasn't Baggage, a sex romp that skewed very young for GSN. This was a serious quizzer that skewed like Jeopardy...old, older, oldest. 3) Exec stupidity. Not much to say here, I'm afraid.

Are there any chances for a revival of the show? GSN seems recommitted to traditional game shows, and they don't get much more traditional than The Chase. But I'm not holding my breath.
