It's not the swimsuit issue

Somebody once cruelly described Sports Illustrated as a magazine your grandfather used to subscribe to.

Okay, the print rag isn't what it used to be, but SI still has an imposing presence on the Interwebs. Not that I read much of their stuff, because they've pretty well stopped covering baseball (slight exaggeration). But this is a full-service game show blog, as I like to point out, so I watched the first ep of SI's online game show Next Question.

This effort should appear next to the definition of "game show, amateur." The show was so clunky and clumsy, it actually had a bit of awkward charm. SI staffers Mitch Goldich and Amy Parlapiano hosted more stiffly than most corpses. A couple other SI employees tried to answer sports trivia questions, but they didn't do very well. For instance, I said Sports Illustrated no longer covers baseball, and the contestants stumbled badly when it came to naming recent baseball MVPs. I knew a lot more of the MVPs than either contestant did.

The set looked like it cost at least ten dollars, and the show attracted a massive throng of about nine hundred viewers. Eventually one of the contestants lost and had to eat a large tomato in one bite. Yummy.
