Vince Young (#8) started slow but finished strong on Day 1 |
- The Riders announced their roster for the minicamp on Tuesday morning. The list contained 35 players, thus complying with CFL rules for OTA's and all are under contract.
- By his own admission, Vince Young was rusty in the first of the two-a-day sessions but was much stronger in the second workout. He said the toughest part of the day was getting through the opening stretching period, which he was forewarned about. He's by far the biggest quarterback I've ever seen in the CFL, and he effortlessly tossed 40- and 50-yard passes downfield.
- Veteran pivot Kevin Glenn was the most polished pivot, leading all passers with an 80%-plus completion percentage. Vince Young was second. However all quarterbacks: Young, Glenn, Bryan Bennett and Jake Heaps showed well.
- Chris Jones revealed after the workout that veteran QB G.J. Kinne is no longer with the team.
- The most eye-popping players on Day 1 were receivers #83 Thomas Mayo (CAL-PENN) and #10 Antwane Grant (Western Kentuck). They quickly became popular targets due to their ability to get open, and hang onto the ball. Jones also singled out #82 Mitchell Baines (Ottawa) for his strong play, and similarities to CFL great Jason Clermont.
- Rookie DB #27 Zavian Bingham (Jackson State) was by far the most productive defensive player, registering three interceptions and several knockdowns. He told Luc Mullinder on the Riderville.com livestream that he was ecstatic to have picked off Vince Young. Jones said they've been targeting Bingham for awhile, and he's glad he lived up to expectations.
- I'll post more notes later but don't forget to tune into the SportsCage today at 4:00 pm on 620 CKRM.
