It's been learned that during Marks CFL Week last week in Regina, a group of Saskatoon investors tabled an expansion franchise application to the CFL's Board of Governors.
It's all part of a plan to have a brand new 30,000-seat stadium built on Saskatoon's exhibition grounds on the southwest side of the city, and award the CFL its 10th franchise.
The idea is that, if the application is approved, the team could actually begin play in 2017 with its home being at Griffiths Stadium at the University of Saskatchewan until construction of the new stadium is complete.
The prospective owners already have a "Name The Team" contest planned for its fans, however sources say the name "Saskatoon Stallions" is favoured.
And get this: the General Manager of the team will be longtime U of S Huskies coach Brian Towriss and the Head Coach will be Gary Etcheverry.
The CFL's Board of Governors is expected to vote on the application this week and an announcement could be made by Friday.
Stay tuned.
