HEADLINES
• Rams QB Noah Picton is poised to become Canada West’s all-time leader in passing yards, needing just 15 to surpass former U of R pivot Teale Orban.
• The Rams have a playoff spot nailed down and will host a Canada West semifinal game with a Week 8 win at UBC regardless of Saturday’s result against the Dinos.
• Calgary comes into Week 7 with first place in the conference all but locked up. The Dinos will clinch top spot with a win on Saturday, and would also clinch with a loss to the Rams by 19 or fewer points.
• Saturday’s game can be seen for free online as the CanadaWest.tv Game of the Week.
PICTON POISED TO BECOME CANADA WEST’S PASSING LEADER: Sometime early in Saturday’s game, Rams QB Noah Picton will likely become Canada West’s all-time leader in passing yards. After last week’s 389-yard performance, Picton now has 9435 yards and needs only 15 more to pass former Rams pivot Teale Orban’s total of 9449 yards.
MORE ON NOAH: Picton took down one of Orban’s records in the wild overtime win last week, registering his 686th career completion on his last pass of the game – a nine-yard toss to Kyle Moortgat in the second extra session – to supplant Orban as the Canada West all-time leader in the category. Orban still holds one record that won’t be broken, at least not on Saturday – he’s still the conference’s career leader with 76 touchdown passes, 14 more than Picton’s career total of 62.
ATLEE TURNS IT UP: RB Atlee Simon was named the U SPORTS Offensive Player of the Week after not only piling up a career-high 264 all-purpose yards in the win over Alberta, but also scoring three times to pull ahead of Jason Clermont as the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns. Simon has been spectacular the past two games for the Rams, accumulating 499 all-purpose yards (368 rushing, 131 receiving) in the road wins over Saskatchewan and Alberta. Already the University of Regina’s career leader with 20 rushing touchdowns, Simon now trails Neal Hughes by only 287 yards for tops on the school’s all-time rushing list.
PICTON PASSES GOLDIE: SB Mitchell Picton’s touchdown catch in the first quarter at Alberta was the 22nd of his career, surpassing the old University of Regina mark of 21 that had been held by Chad Goldie since the 2008 season. Picton has already cemented his place in the Rams record book in the other major receiving categories – he’s third in receiving yards (2231) and fourth in catches (155).
DHEILLY THREATENING SINGLE-SEASON MARKS: DL Nicholas Dheilly missed the Manitoba game due to injury, but has had at least a half sack in each of his five games played so far and has registered one sack in four consecutive contests. He’s Canada West’s leader in both sacks (4½) and tackles for loss (7½) and has a chance at the U of R’s single-season record in both of those categories – current Chicago Bears lineman Akiem Hicks set the sacks mark at 6½ back in 2011, while Logan Brooks and Stefan Charles both had 10½ tackles for loss that same year.
FIFTH-YEAR DAY: The Rams will honour their 11 fifth-year players prior to Saturday’s game. That group includes WR Brady Eurich, LB Frankie Gray, SB Thomas Huber, DL Thomas Lill, LB Zack McEachern, DL Bryce McKinnon, SB Mitch Picton, DB Jeff Propp, DB Korey Sheppard-Greene, WR Mitch Thompson, and QB Tyler Vieira.
RAMS IN THE PROS: The Rams currently have eight players on active professional rosters, including three in the NFL – Akiem Hicks (Chicago), Brett Jones (New York Giants), and Jon Ryan (Seattle). The five University of Regina alumni in the CFL are Kahlen Branning (Winnipeg), Tevaughn Campbell (Montreal), Jorgen Hus (Saskatchewan), Brendon LaBatte (Saskatchewan), and Jeremy Zver (Saskatchewan). There’s also two former U of R players on CFL non-active rosters, including BC’s Jas Dhillon (six-game injured list) and Saskatchewan’s Chris Getzlaf (practice squad).
MAN UP AGAINST VIOLENCE: Saturday's game will serve as an unofficial "kickoff" to Man Up Against Violence Week, which begins at the University of Regina on Monday. The Man Up Against Violence initiative provides educational and informative opportunities in an effort to raise awareness around the issue of violence in our communities.
